Discover Regenerative Farming at Apple Acres Farm
Nestled in the Forests of Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Apple Acres Farm is a small-scale, regenerative family farm located just minutes from downtown Houghton, Michigan. Established in 2020, our 14-acre property is nestled into a heritage apple orchard that slopes into a mature, diverse forest with 100-year-old conifers and hardwoods. Bordered by a trout stream, our off-grid, solar-powered farm is a true oasis of nature and sustainability.
Embracing Small-Scale, Diversified Farming
As first-generation farmers, we believe that small is both beautiful and sustainable. Our farming practices are guided by what our land needs and can support. Using permaculture design principles, we work to build healthy topsoil, improve the farm's overall resilience, and grow, forage, and raise nutritious and delicious foods - all without the use of chemicals or synthetic inputs.
Rather than focusing on getting bigger, each year we look for ways to grow better and more ecologically diverse. This not only helps us reduce risks from total crop failures, but it also makes our farming operation more resilient to the inevitable ups and downs of any growing season. To further improve the health and vitality of the land, we continue to incorporate the natural behaviors of livestock into our farming practices.
Meet Our Hardworking Farm Crew
Apple Acres Farm is home to a lively crew of free-range chickens and ducks that provide nutrient-rich eggs, as well as our three friendly Nigerian dwarf and Nubian goats - Niko, Nibler, and Jasper. These cute little dudes help us manage less desirable vegetation around the farm. We're also quite smitten with our resident honey bees and the diverse native pollinators they attract, which are essential for pollinating our heritage apple orchard and diverse array of crops.
Sharing the Farm with Visitors
While we love the peaceful solitude of our off-grid farm, we also enjoy sharing our sustainable oasis with others. We offer a variety of farm tours and experiences, from hiking with our goats to wild mushroom foraging and natural beekeeping classes. Guests can also book an on-farm stay in our cozy studio loft or camp amidst the goats.
Our goal is to provide opportunities for visitors to connect more deeply with the natural world and a human-scaled, regenerative food system. Whether you're looking to unplug, learn new skills, or simply enjoy the company of farm animals, we invite you to experience the magic of Apple Acres Farm.
A Commitment to Sustainability
In addition to our regenerative farming practices, we've also integrated numerous green features throughout our farm to reduce energy and water use, minimize waste, and promote sustainability. From chemical-free cleaning products to cloth towels and composting toilets, we strive to model environmentally-conscious living for our guests.
