Asturcilla is a cocoa and hazelnut spread made by the Kikiricoop cooperative in Santolaya de Cabranes, in the municipality of Cabranes (Asturias). The project grew out of the hazelnut working group at the El Prial rural development centre, with the aim of making use of Asturian hazelnuts, a crop increasingly abandoned in the area. The spread is made with organic milk, hazelnuts, sunflower oil, panela sugar and cocoa, without palm oil, colourings or preservatives.
The cooperative runs guided visits to the Cooperativa Agroecológica de Cabranes for individuals as well as groups and schools, showing how Asturcilla is made and how the Funginatur shiitake mushrooms are grown in the woods. Each visit includes a tasting of Asturcilla and mushrooms, and afterwards visitors can buy the cooperative's products and fresh mushrooms.
