Monasterio de Corias Winery: Heroic Viticulture in the Mountains of Asturias
Discovering the Essence of the Winemaking Tradition of Cangas del Narcea
In the rugged mountains of southwestern Asturias, the Monasterio de Corias Winery stands as a living witness to the heroic viticulture that has marked the history of this region. From the surroundings of the imposing Monasterio de Corias, founded in the 11th century, our winegrowers have been committed for generations to cultivating exceptional grapes, capturing the uniqueness of this land in each of our wines.
A History Rooted in Tradition
The origins of our winery date back to the 11th century, when the Benedictine monks of the Monasterio de Corias began cultivating the vine, establishing a winemaking tradition that lasted for centuries. Over the years, this region experienced periods of prosperity and crisis, such as the devastating arrival of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, which marked a period of decline for local viticulture.
However, in the early 21st century, the opening of the Monasterio de Corias Winery in the year 2000 marked a moment of revitalization and rebirth for this wine heritage. Today, our winery has consolidated itself as a benchmark of heroic viticulture, producing up to twelve different wines that reflect our commitment to tradition and quality.
Exceptional Terroir: The Soul of Our Wines
The secret of our wines lies in the exceptional terroir of southwestern Asturias. Located in a protected microclimate sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains and the influence of the Cantabrian Sea, our vineyards enjoy more hours of sunshine and less rainfall than the rest of the region, creating ideal conditions for vine cultivation.
Our vineyards stretch across steep slopes, with gradients of up to 80%, which forces us to carry out careful manual cultivation. The slate and schist soils, rich in minerals, contribute to the uniqueness and quality of our wines, providing distinctive characteristics and a strong mineral character that reflects the essence of the Cangas del Narcea terroir.
Local Varieties and Heroic Viticulture
At Monasterio de Corias, we are proud to work with local varieties such as Albarín Blanco, Verdejo Negro, Carrasquín, and Albarín Tinto, which capture the essence of the region's winemaking tradition. Our winery is registered with CERVIM, an organization that recognizes the world's most extreme mountain viticulture regions, reflecting the heroic nature of our work.
Each stage of the winemaking process is meticulously cared for, from the manual harvesting of the grapes to the aging in oak barrels. In our modern facilities, we combine the most advanced technology with respect for traditional techniques, ensuring that each wine has a complex and harmonious aromatic profile.
