Asturian Honey "LA CALDUYA"
Welcome to Miel La Calduya
A unique experience with artisanal honey from Asturias
Our History and Philosophy
Inherited Artisanal Beekeeping
We practice an artisanal beekeeping inherited from our family with a great passion for the world of bees. Just as previous generations had done, we continue the entire process in a natural and artisanal way: from the management of our hives, care, to the extraction of honey and even the production of the products made by our bees.
Iberian Black Bee, the Native of Asturias
We work with the Iberian black bee (Apis mellifera iberiensis), an endemic bee, which is the native honey bee of our region. A black bee; the queens are dark in tone and uniform in color, their movements are fast and they are quite nervous; although they are prolific and highly fertile when the necessary environmental conditions are met and they are the most adapted to our natural environment.
Own and Limited Production
Our production is own and limited, our distribution channels are km0 by attending agri-food fairs and markets, distribution in small local product stores; it is also possible to buy our honey online and we handle telephone orders.
More than Honey: Pollen, Propolis, Wax and Pollination Services
In addition to our honey, which is of great quality, we have a variety of fresh pollen, propolis, candles, honeycombs and other derivatives. We also prepare bee nuclei and hives on demand; as well as providing professional pollination services in Asturias.
Our Artisanal Honeys
Mountain Honey: Heather and Chestnut
Our mountain honey is a blend of heather and chestnut honeys, two of the main nectar resources in our forests. These forests, located in the steepest and most rugged areas, provide our bees with a unique and privileged habitat.
Calluna Honey
The Calluna honey, from the flowering of Calluna vulgaris, is a monofloral honey with an intense and marked flavor. This plant, also known as heather, is characteristic of the high mountain areas of Asturias.
Eucalyptus Honey
The eucalyptus honey has a mild and delicate flavor. Our bees collect the nectar from the eucalyptus trees that populate some areas of western Asturias, giving rise to this very special honey.
Origin and Location
The Historic Park of the Navia
Our apiaries are located in the Navia river basin, in the municipalities of Pesoz, Boal, San Martín de Oscos, Villanueva de Oscos and Grandas de Salime. This area, belonging to the Historic Park of the Navia, is characterized by its lush nature, the quality of its waters and a special thermal microclimate that allows the presence of a cork oak forest, a species more typical of the Mediterranean climate.
A Unique and Privileged Habitat
These forests are settled on acidic soils, black slates in areas of steep slopes. Along with the cork oaks, there are other trees and shrubs such as box, laurel, strawberry tree, chestnut and heathers (Erica Australis, Erica Umbellata, Erica Cinerea and Calluna Vulgaris) ideal for providing nectar-bearing food to our bees. As well as providing a unique and privileged habitat for their development.
Pollination Services
Collaborating with Agricultural Producers
At Miel La Calduya, we offer pollination services for crop professionals in Asturias. We collaborate with producers of apples, kiwis, blueberries or avocados.
The Bee, the Main Pollinator
Studies from universities and relevant entities such as SERIDA indicate that the best, most efficient and main crop pollinator is the bee. In apple trees, the pollinator is most present with 61% of the total pollination of these fruit trees.
Improving Production and Quality
Thus, our bees contribute to improving the yield of crops by producing better quality and larger fruits. We understand that the role of bees is fundamental for agriculture and for the preservation of biodiversity.
