Blue Cheeses from El Cabriteru: Tradition and Innovation in the Picos de Europa

Tracing the Origins

The Artisanal Cheese Factory El Cabriteru is located in Arenas de Cabrales, a small village of 900 inhabitants in the Picos de Europa, a region famous for its mountain tourism, rich gastronomy, and picturesque natural beauty. Here, the production of blue cheeses dates back centuries.

In the past, the economy of many Cabrales villages depended almost entirely on sheep and goat farming, as the rugged terrain was suitable for them. At that time, not everyone could afford to have cows, whose purchase and maintenance required a significant investment.

Inspired by these ancestral cheese-making traditions, at the Artisanal Cheese Factory El Cabriteru, we have innovated and increased the diversity of cheeses in the area, producing our blue cheeses exclusively with raw sheep and goat milk from our own livestock.

A Blue Cheese with the Authentic Taste of the Past

Our production process faithfully follows the traditional techniques of the Cabrales cheese makers, combining them with the latest technological advances of the 21st century. In this way, we achieve a blue cheese whose nuances of aroma and flavor will transport you instantly to the Asturian mountains, evoking that authentic taste of the past.

Each of our three varieties of blue cheese has its own personality:

Mixed blue cheese (sheep and goat): It quickly conveys that touch of limestone and mountain. It is a flavorful and intense cheese, with a clean aroma, balanced, and with a prolonged aftertaste.

Goat blue cheese: Elegant, with character, with pure lactic notes, firm and powerful, with a great flavor and harmonious aftertaste.

Sheep blue cheese: Aromatic and seductive, with a long, delicious, deep, and intense aftertaste.

International Recognition

Our blue cheeses have been awarded at the prestigious World Cheese Awards, the most important cheese competition in the world. In 2021, we obtained a gold medal as "Best cheese in the world made with the milk of more than one animal" and a silver medal as "Second best blue cheese in the world made with sheep's milk".

These international awards are a recognition of our daily effort for excellence and authenticity, and inspire us to continue preserving traditional and sustainable production methods.
