The Quesería d'Onao is a family business with deep roots in the region's livestock farming tradition. Since 1950, this beloved cheese factory has been producing the iconic Gamonéu del Valle cheese, a culinary treasure that has captivated palates around the world.
Headed by Belén and her family, the Quesería d'Onao is much more than just a cheese producer. It is a beacon of the culture and lifestyle of the Picos de Europa, where the harmony between man and nature is reflected in every stage of the production process.
Discovering the Secrets of Gamonéu Cheese
On our farm, you can see our cows, goats, and sheep grazing, whose raw milk is the fundamental basis for the production of Gamonéu cheese. Following traditional methods, we combine these three milks to create a perfect balance of flavors and textures.
The next step is the smoking process, where we use oak wood from the surrounding forests to imbue the cheese with a delicate wood aroma. Finally, the cheese matures in the Cueva Oscura, located in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park, where the unique temperature and humidity conditions give it its distinctive character.
Awards and Distinctions
The Quesería d'Onao has followed a path of success and recognition at the national and international level. In 2013, our Gamonéu cheese won the third prize for the best cheese at the prestigious Gourmetquesos competition. That same year, the Cofradía de Amigos de los Quesos del Principado de Asturias awarded us the title of "Distinguished Collaborator" for our work in defending and promoting artisanal cheeses and local gastronomy.
