A unique visit to the Vega de Ario Cheese Factory
Welcome to the Vega de Ario Cheese Factory
Our history
The Vega de Ario Cheese Factory is located in the town of Benia de Onís, in the heart of the Picos de Europa. This artisanal and family-run cheese factory has been producing the iconic Gamonéu cheese from the valley for more than three decades.
After growing up as shepherds and cheesemakers in the Vega de Ario pasture, José Antonio and his father Cirilo Sánchez, a renowned shepherd and mountain guide, decided to found this cheese factory to continue the family tradition.
Today, it is Rosa and her son Ángel Sánchez who are responsible for keeping this business alive, adapting it to modern times without losing the essence of traditional cheesemaking.
