Gamonéu Cheese: A Jewel of the Picos de Europa

A Treasure of the Asturian Land

The Gamonéu cheese is one of the jewels of the Asturian cheese world, a unique product that reflects the essence of this region. Every piece of this exquisite delicacy is a perfect embodiment of Asturian geography and culture.

The milk that gives it life comes from herds grazing on the snow-capped peaks of the Picos de Europa, the home of Gamonéu. The maturation of each cheese in the caves, following an ancestral process, gives the rind bluish, reddish, and greenish tones that perfectly reproduce the colors of the Asturian sky and mountains.

Tradition and Artisanal Expertise

The Gamonéu cheese is the result of the effort and care of several generations of shepherds and cheesemakers who have passed down the secrets of its production from parents to children. Each step of the process, from milking to cave maturation, is carried out by hand, respecting traditional methods that have endured over time.

The blend of cow, sheep, and goat milk, the slow smoking with native woods, and the refining in the caves of the Picos de Europa, give Gamonéu a unique and distinctive texture, aroma, and flavor. It is a fatty cheese, with a natural rind, slightly smoked, and with light efflorescences of penicillium on the edges, captivating all who try it.

Two Varieties, One Origin

The Gamonéu cheese is produced in two distinct versions: Gamonéu del Valle and Gamonéu del Puerto. Both varieties share the same origin and traditional production methods, but differ in some details.

The Gamonéu del Valle is produced in small family-run dairies located in the valleys of Onís and Cangas de Onís, while the Gamonéu del Puerto is exclusively made in the mountain huts of these same areas. This latter variety has a more limited production and is considered by many to be one of the best cheeses in the world.

Protected by the Denomination of Origin

Both Gamonéu del Valle and Gamonéu del Puerto have the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Gamonéu" or "Gamonedo". This quality seal guarantees that each piece has been produced following strict controls and requirements that preserve the authenticity and unique characteristics of this cheese.

Only cheeses bearing the numbered counter-label of the PDO can be considered authentic Gamonéu cheeses, ensuring the consumer the origin, quality, and traditional production methods of this Asturian cheese treasure.

A Flavor That Captivates

When biting into a Gamonéu cheese, the palate delights in an explosion of flavors and textures. The buttery softness of the paste contrasts with the smoky lightness of the rind, while the piquant touches and the hazelnut persistence captivate the sense of taste.

The clean and penetrating aroma of Gamonéu, with its notes of smoke, immediately evokes the grandeur of the Picos de Europa and the richness of the Asturian cheese tradition. Each bite is a sensory journey through the colors, smells, and flavors of this land.

More Than Just a Cheese, a Symbol of Asturias

The Gamonéu cheese goes beyond being a simple food product. It is a symbol of Asturian identity, a reflection of its history, culture, and unique natural environment. Each piece contains the essence of the Picos de Europa, its shepherds, and its people, making it a treasure that captivates all those who have the opportunity to try it.

Tasting an authentic Gamonéu cheese is discovering the true soul of Asturias, it is traveling through the senses to that land of mountains and valleys, caves and meadows, where tradition and nature merge into a unique and unparalleled delicacy.
